On Friday, first responders were called to a scene at 4:24PM involving a collision between an SUV and a train that left two family members dead and seriously injuring a third. Police believe the northbound Kia Sportage failed to yield at the Norfolk Southern track crossing at 800 East, about three-fourths of a mile before the point where the train stopped near the Logansport Road bridge, according to police. The crossing at 800 East is marked by rail crossing and yield signs. The SUV, struck on the passenger side, got locked onto the front of the train and was dragged west along the tracks until the train stopped in a location that first responders could not easily reach. 42 year old Stephanie A. Carter and her 19 year old son Nathaniel Gibbs, died at the scene. Another son of Carter’s, 22 year old Bradley Graves, who was driving, was airlifted to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne. All three are Logansport residents. Logansport Road was closed to traffic in the immediate aftermath of the crash and was reopened around 7:30PM.
