Double Up Indiana Program continues for Downtown Wabash Farmers Market

WABASH, IN—Downtown Wabash, Inc. is pleased to announce the continuation of Double Up Indiana programming for SNAP customers, which offers free fruits and vegetables when shoppers use SNAP/EBT cards during the 2024 market season. For each $1 spent in SNAP at the market, customers earn $1 in Double Up incentives to buy fruits and vegetables at the same market. Each customer is limited to earning $20 per day in Double Up incentives. 

“We are fortunate to continue implementing the Double Up program for the second year in a row, as these programs play a crucial role in fostering inclusivity and accessibility within our community,” said Downtown Wabash, Inc. Market Coordinator, Carly Hawkins. “We are excited to watch the program grow and continue to impact the Wabash community.” 

The goal of the Double Up program is to allow families to purchase fresh, healthy food at affordable prices while also supporting local farmers and advancing economic growth. By welcoming these programs, the Downtown Wabash Farmers Market strives to provide a vibrant community-centered environment, where everyone can enjoy the offerings and benefits of fresh produce. 

During the 2023 season, the Downtown Wabash Farmers Market generated more than $225,000 in handmade, homemade and homegrown vendor sales. With more than 60 vendors throughout the season, the financial impact on the local economy is significant. According to American Express, 67¢ of every dollar spent at local farms and small businesses stays within the local economy.

Double Up Indiana is a program of the St. Joseph Community Health Foundation in Fort Wayne, Ind. and is funded by the Indiana Department of Health’s Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Purdue Extension Community Wellness Coordinators provide technical assistance to market managers. 

The program is sponsored by the St. Joseph Community Health Foundation with funding from the Indiana Department of Health, made possible by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The Downtown Wabash Farmers Market will enter its 17th season beginning Saturday, May 11 in Downtown Wabash, Ind. The 2024 season will take place every Saturday morning 8 a.m. – noon from May 11 – Sept. 28.
