Roy Lee Owings

Roy Lee Owings, 84, Marion, passed away at 1:07 am on Thursday, April 6, 2023, at Marion Health. He was born in Marion, Indiana, on Friday, July 22, 1938, to Clarence and Bessie (Fisher) Owings. He was married to Dorcus “Dottie” Marie (Davis) Owings, who preceded him in death.

Roy graduated from Sweetser High School and served in the U.S. Army as a diesel mechanic.  He spent time in Ecuador, working and tracking the first satellite to ever exist, Project Vanguard.  Following his military service, he was a lathe operator at Dana Corp. until his retirement in 1995. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed woodworking and taught his children how to cook. He was the “King of the Grill” and master baker in his “cookie kitchen.” He will be missed dearly by his family.  

Survivors include his sons, Robert L. Owings of Elkhart, Roger L. Owings of Kokomo, and Jeffrey L. Owings of Danielsville, Georgia; daughter, Darlene Owings of Elkhart; sister, Linda L. Mullens of Crawfordsville; seven grandchildren; four great-grandsons; one great-great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Richard Owings, James Owings, and David Owings; and daughter, Patricia Alice Owings.

The family will receive visitors from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on Wednesday, April 12, 2023, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral & Cremation Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, IN.

Immediately following the time of visitation, a service to celebrate Roy’s life will begin at 1:00 pm with Donald Miller officiating.  Burial will take place at Grant Memorial Park.
