Indianapolis, IN – The American Red Cross shelter at Kokomo Event & Conference Center will transition into a Red Cross Service Center today at 5 p.m. Currently, the population for the shelter is zero. The service center will be open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., to provide client case work to residents affected by the storms.

Chad Priest, regional chief executive officer for the American Red Cross’ Indiana Region, praised the local emergency management, government officials and Red Cross workers for all their hard work. “In an event like this, it is truly amazing to see how each agency mobilizes, to help those affected,” said Priest. “We have done great work throughout the past week, and I am very proud to be part this team, but we know the work for the Red Cross is not yet finished, as we move toward the next phase in the coming weeks and months.”

The Red Cross now shifts into client case work to help the hundreds of families affected by the tornadoes. Client case work is being conducted at the Kokomo Event & Conference Center at
1500 N. Reed Rd, Kokomo, IN 46901. Residents can call (765) 459-4162 to inquire about disaster relief assistance and to speak with a client caseworker.

The work of the Red Cross is never finished. Even after a disaster, local volunteers help to educate people about risks and prepare communities for the next disaster. Red Cross volunteers may canvass neighborhoods to provide disaster information. We may also speak to school, faith-based or civic groups about disaster preparedness.

The Indiana Region serves 87 Indiana counties consisting of 10 Homeland Security Disaster Districts and six Red Cross chapters: Central Indiana (Indianapolis headquarters), Northern Indiana (South Bend headquarters), Northeast Indiana (Fort Wayne headquarters), Northwest (Merrillville headquarters), Southern Indiana (Evansville headquarters) and West Central Indiana (Terre Haute headquarters).
