NORTH MANCHESTER,Indiana – Tuesday, June 7, 2016 at 7p.m. the District 18 Democrats met at North Manchester’s Warvel Park Pavilion on Market Street.   A caucus was held to select a Democratic candidate for Indiana State House of Representatives, a seat currently held by David Wolkins. Precinct committeemen from the district must meet and vote in order to fill a vacancy from the May primary.

Chad Harris, being the County Chairman with the largest representation in the district conducted the caucus.  David Kolbe, Kosciusko County Chairman was also present.  District 18 includes all of Wabash, much of Kosciusko, and parts of Miami and Grant counties.  Twenty six persons attended.  Dee M Moore was nominated and then elected unanimously.

She spoke of issue differences between herself and Wolkins.  Moore listed many bills made law that originated through a national organization, the American Legislation Exchange Council, (ALEC), of which Wolkins is the Indiana House State Chairman.  She then explained how ALEC is funded by multinational corporations and billionaires working to change laws for their profit with disregard for the people of the district.

Among these laws Moore criticized are the school’s overuse of outside standardized testing, rating schools and teachers with imbalanced criteria and the push for more privatization of schools for ALEC’s profits.  She said ALEC denies climate change, is working to eliminate unions, and wants to privatize healthcare, prisons, Veteran’s hospitals, and Social Security.  She stated it also is the origin of many divisive laws such as discrimination against the LGBT community and immigrants, even though most of our ancestry is from outside this country.

She concluded with Lincoln’s words to work together for a nation “. . . of the people, by the people, for the people that shall not perish”.  This includes considering the next 7 generations in our actions.
