Mary L. Brewer, age 89, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday January 8, 2019 at 9:30 am at the Heritage Pointe of Huntington. She graduated from Roanoke High School in 1947, and worked at Rogers Market as a cashier for 10 years. She was a member of Pleasant Chapel United Methodist Church, Roanoke, and Roanoke American Legion Post #160 Auxiliary, where she was a past president. She was a member of the Knit Chicks and enjoyed crocheting.
Mary was born July 1, 1929, in Roanoke, the daughter of Wendell Thurman and Chloe W (Crakes) Hartley. On November 1, 1947 she married her beloved husband of 63 years Thomas J. Brewer in Roanoke. He passed away April 17, 2011. She is survived by 2 daughters Cheryl Ann Allen of Fort Wayne and Terrie S. Brewer of Huntington, a son Thomas J. Brewer Jr. of Fort Wayne, 8 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, a sister Katherine (Robert) Hoffman of Huntington and a brother Norman Hartley of Huntington. She was preceded in death by sisters Wanda Campbell, Carol Allen, Dorothy Merriman, and Pansy Wible, brothers Art, Carl, Thurman, Fred and Albert Hartley, and 3 grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Friday, January 11, from 2-4 & 6-8 pm at Roanoke Memorial Chapel of Deal-Rice Funeral Homes and Saturday January 12 from 10-11 am preceding the 11:00 am funeral service at the funeral home. Pastor Joel Yeager of Pleasant Chapel United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will follow in Pleasant Chapel Cemetery, Roanoke.
