Mary Elizabeth (Smith) McClelland McElderry, 94, of Huntington, IN, formerly of Bluffton, IN, died on April 5, 2018 at Tipton Place in Huntington, IN.
Mrs. McElderry was born in 1923 in Warren, Indiana, the daughter of Gilbert and Rachel Smith. She attended Liberty Center High School and Ball State Teachers College, where she received her degree in nursing. In 1945, Mrs. McElderry entered active duty as a Lieutenant in the United States Army Nursing Corp. and was stationed at Wakeman General Hospital, Camp Atterbury, Indiana. She was awarded the American Theater Ribbon and Victory Medal by President Harry S. Truman. She served her country admirably and was honorably discharged in 1946. Following her service in WWII, Mrs. McElderry spent most of her professional career as a nurse at Caylor Nickel Clinic in Bluffton, Indiana.
She was married to Dr. Harry Nichols McClelland on September 21, 1946, in Marion, Indiana, and is survived by her two children, Marcia Lee McClelland, of Huntington, Indiana, and Maurice (Susan) Pearce McClelland, of Westfield, New Jersey. She is also survived by her granddaughters, Jordan (Daniel) McClelland Seme, of Denver, Colorado, and Ashley (Sean) McClelland Hassall and her great grandchildren, Jadyn, Cadynce and Grasyn Hassall, all of St. Michael Minnesota. Mary later remarried Richard McElderry of Bluffton, IN. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Viewing will be held at Glancy-H. Brown & Son Funeral Home, 203 N. Matilda St. Warren, IN on Tuesday, April 17, 2018 from 10:00 AM to 11:00AM.The funeral service will immediately follow at 11:00 AM with Pastor Lyle Ewing officiating. Burial will take place in the Masonic cemetery, East 3rd Street in Warren, IN.
