Lester H. Young, Sr., 88, Marion, son of the late Harrison and Fronia (Carrol) Young, died at 2:27 p.m. on Monday, December 4, 2017, at Wesleyan Health Care Center in Marion. He was born in Monticello, Kentucky, on June 8, 1929, and married Helen C. Abercrombie on November 13, 1951. She preceded him in death on December 24, 2005.
Following his service with the United States Army, Lester drove the city bus in Muncie. Later, he became a self-employed truck driver, where he was awarded the 3 Million Mile Safe Driver Award by the American Trucking Association for not having an accident or getting a ticket. He was a member of Sunnycrest Baptist Church, where he was involved in the Super ’60s. Lester also enjoyed motorcycles and was a hard worker all of his life. It was his desire to take care of his family and he did it well because of his great love for them.
He is survived by his loving children, Tony Young, Fort Wayne, Lester Young, Jr., Marion, Jeff (Lori) Young, Marion, Antoine (Debbie) Young, Greenwood, Brian (Christal) Young, Marion, and Tina (Tom) Hubbard, Marion; 17 grandchildren and 33+ great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Lola and Helen.
In addition to his parents and his wife of 54 years, Helen, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Shirley Purdy; sister, Geraldine; and three brothers, Chester, Bruce, and Phillip.
The family will receive visitors from 10 a.m. to 12 noon with Lester’s funeral service beginning at 12 noon on Friday, December 8, 2017, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, IN. Pastor Troy Bishop will be officiating with burial following at Grant Memorial Park.
