MARION,Indiana – Police are warning of a new problem that has been emerging with street drugs that is becoming more deadly, dramatically…and they are warning users.

Officers with the Marion Police Department have found themselves fighting against heroin laced with fentanyl. They are making the discovery across the board in the heroin they buy on the street during busts and recover during investigations. They are not alone. It is becoming a nationwide problem. Fentanyl is a drug that is used to treat chronic pain. Emergency rooms have the drug in vials but it also comes in patch form. What appears to be happening is people mix the contents of the patch with heroin and sell it on the streets. Fentanyl is about 50 times more potent, which results in many overdose victims being found dead with the needle still in their arms. The overdose death numbers from heroin laced with fentanyl are dramatically increasing not only in Marion but across the nation.
