Smith promoted to rank of Lieutenant

PERU, IN- On May 7, 2024, Sergeant Keith Smith was approved for promotion to the rank of lieutenant by the City of Peru Board of Public Works and Safety. Lieutenant Smith is a nine-year veteran of the Peru Police Department and has been serving as the second shift sergeant since August 2023. Prior to his appointment to sergeant, Lieutenant Smith served as a patrol officer. He currently serves as a field training officer, Taser instructor, and is the department coordinator for Operation Pullover programs administered by the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute. Lieutenant Smith is also the department K9 handler for his partner, Tygo.

A native of Osceola, Indiana, Lieutenant Smith graduated from Penn High School. He also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Indiana University, Bloomington, and is a graduate of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy at Indiana University. Lieutenant Smith resides in Miami County with his wife, Makenzie and their two children. Lieutenant Smith will be officially sworn into his new rank at the city council meeting on Monday, June 3, 2024.
