Franklin D. Bounds, born Nov. 15, 1932, to the late George W. and Josephine (Williams) Bounds, passed away at the age of 85. He was born in Hughs, Arkansas, and came to Marion in 1949.
Franklin followed his brother George to Marion to seek employment. Here he began working as a car wash attendant for service stations until 1963, when he enlisted in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1965. He returned to his home in Marion and began his training in auto mechanics. He worked for the Marion Police Department for four years as a mechanic, and in 1970 he leased Bounds Amoco where he owned and operated the station for 29 years until his retirement in 1999. After his retirement he worked for Roller’s Cleaners. On Nov. 4, 1989, Franklin married Diana S. Lee. Mrs. Bounds survives in their Marion home.
Franklin was heavily involved in community activities, including the Marion Morning Exchange Club where he was past president, Auxiliary Civil Defense of Police, United Way of Grant County and Readers Adviser of the Chronicle-Tribune. He was a 32nd degree Mason with the Wilson Lodge and a faithful member of Allen Temple where he served as trustee and gave his time and talent in spearheading the construction of the Fellowship Hall. Franklin also took a great interest in his family and researched the Bounds family ancestry back to 1845.
He is survived by his wife, Diana S. (Lee) Bounds, Marion; two children, Michael D. Bounds, Oklahoma, and Juanita Louise (Randy) Bounds, Walla Walla, Washington; adopted granddaughter, Tiffany (Mike) Snyder, LaFontaine; his loyal canine friend, Smokey; two brothers, George W. Bounds, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and David L. Bounds, Marion; six grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
Franklin is also preceded in death by his baby sister and his brother, John James Bounds.
The funeral service will be held at noon Saturday, Oct. 13, 2018, in Allen Temple AME Church, 3440 S. Washington St., Marion, Indiana, with the Rev. Allen McClendon officiating. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. until services on Saturday in the church. Owen-Duncan Funeral Home, Marion Chapel, 2722 S. Washington St., Marion, Indiana, was entrusted with the arrangements. The burial with military honors will be held in Gardens of Memory Cemetery, Marion. Memorial contributions may be directed to Allen Temple AME Church.
