Charley Creek Inn announces promotions

WABASH, IN– Charley Creek Inn of Wabash announces the promotion of David Hunt as Retail Operations Manager, the promotion of Christina Penny as Assistant Front Desk Manager and the hire of Josh Havermale as bartender.

Since first joining Charley Creek Inn in December 2014 Hunt has had many roles. His first professional chef job developed into a career as he led the kitchen as pastry chef. The annual holiday ambiance can also be attributed to his leadership as he oversees Christmas decoration. In 2021, he became the manager of the Ice Cream & Candy Shoppe. Under his direction, the shop increased revenue and refined inventory. With the departure of Wine & Cheese Bar Manager, Jake McAfee, at the beginning of March, Hunt acquired the role of Retail Operations Manager.

In his new position, Hunt will oversee daily operations for both the Wine & Cheese Bar and Ice Cream & Candy Shoppe. He will be responsible for managing staff, ensuring that customer service and operational standards are met, maintaining inventory levels, monitoring sales trends and identifying areas for improvement.

“David has a proven track record in small retail operations, which he has exhibited in raising the bar in the Ice Cream & Candy Shoppe,” said Howard Kaler, General Manager. “I am really excited to watch him bring Charley Creek Inn’s Wine & Cheese bar up to the next level.”

Penny joins the company with a background in customer service and hospitality. After working for the Disney Store in California for five years, she transitioned to the hotel industry. Prior to her starting in October 2023 at Charley Creek Inn, she gained two years’ experience from Motel 6 and Hilton.

As Assistant Front Desk Manager, Penny will assist with overseeing the day-to-day operations of the front desk: organizing packages; ensuring that team members follow established procedures for check-ins, check-outs and other front desk functions; handling guest concerns; providing training and guidance to front desk team; and managing some financial tasks.

“Penny demonstrates initiative and attention to detail,” said Kari Highley, Interim Front Desk Manager. “Her vast variety of experience brings insight to the team. Her proactive approach, strong work ethic and problem-solving skills have been assets.”

Havermale bring 12 years of bartending experience to Charley Creek Inn. He has served as manager of chain restaurants including iHop, Bru Burger and Buffalo Wild Wings. Havermale says the highlight of his job is chatting with guests and making everyone feel comfortable while enjoying a good drink.

“Since the onset of COVID-19 the Green Hat Lounge only had a part-time bartender two days a week. Josh stepped right in and has made the Green Hat Lounge ‘his own.’ It is so great to see that operation coming alive again,” Kaler said.

Charley Creek Inn is a restored, historic boutique hotel, original built in the 1920s, located in downtown Wabash. It offers 30 individually-decorated guest rooms and suites, locally sourced upscale dining at Twenty Restaurant, live performances at the Green Hat Lounge speakeasy, artisan chocolate and Indiana-made ice cream in the Ice Cream & Candy Shoppe as well as gourmet cheeses and wine. It has served as a catalyst for downtown renewal since it reopened in 2010 after being purchased and renovated by local philanthropist and historic preservation aficionado Richard E. Ford, of the Ford Meter Box family.
