Carol Lois Fogle Maggart

Carol Lois Fogle Maggart, 88, Marion, passed away at 7:01 pm on Tuesday, August 23, 2022, at Marion Health. She was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, on Friday, December 29, 1933, to Donald B. and Leone Fogle. She later moved to Marion, Indiana, and attended schools at Emerson, McCulloch, and Marion High. She had three sisters–Marilyn, Mary, and Linda–and one brother–Richard.

Carol met Philip “Phil” E. Maggart while visiting a friend at Ball State University. This encounter blossomed into a marriage. The wedding took place on July 10, 1953, at First Christian Church.

Shortly before the wedding date, Phil received orders to report to Samson Air Base, the Air Force’s Indoctrination Center in Rome, New York. The next destination was to Graham Air Base in Florida for primary pilot training. They were transferred to Enid, Oklahoma, for six months of further pilot training. They then transferred to Gary Air Base in San Marcos, Texas, where housing was virtually non-existent.

Phil received orders to be assigned to Korea. Carol prepared to return to Marion and wait for the return of her husband. During the processing in Japan, Phil was reassigned to The 4th Fighter Interceptor Wing in Chitose, Japan. After three months, he was able to rent a small Japanese home for her to travel to Seattle, Washington, for departure on the USS transport ship with 2,200 army replacements. Near the tip of the Aleutians, the ship encountered a typhoon that was very concerning to the personnel on board. Carol was employed by the US Army 8th Battalion, CIC Sapporo, Japan.

After a three-year assignment, they returned to Randolph Air Force Base in Texas. Shortly thereafter, Phil’s squadron was moved to Stead Air Force Base in Reno, Nevada. There were several permanent moves in a short time and Carol never complained. A short time later, another transfer took place to Illinois to Logistic School for a year, followed by an overseas assignment to Tripoli, Libya. Here, Carol used a great deal of imagination in managing the home and the family as they had to meet the demands of having to live on the Libyan economy.

After three years of struggling to manage the family, they returned to Rantoul, Illinois, for advanced logistics training. Housing was extremely limited, and a house trailer was home for three months. Carol did wonders with the family with only limited facilities to work with.

The next assignment was to Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. Carol again grabbed the bull by the horns and organized the household while living off base in the most expensive environment in the United States.

Another three years passed and a new assignment was on the horizon–Vietnam–with only a 30-day notification! A decision was made to return to Marion while Phil was in Vietnam. Every three years there was upheaval. She enrolled the boys in school and managed to set up a new home while Phil was in Vietnam.

After Vietnam, the next assignment was to Alaska for three years, followed by the final assignment to Wright Patterson Air Force Base. A new venture now was in store as Phil accepted a position with TRW, Iran. Carol then re-entered the leadership role by getting the boys enrolled in school and setting up a new household. After three years of questionable security in the wake of an overthrow of the Shaw, a return to Marion was welcomed.

Carol attended Art and Music classes at Marion College, and she was a member of the Marion Garden Club and several other associations.

Survivors include her husband, Philip E. Maggart of Marion; sons, Charles L. (Nicolette) Maggart of Idaho Falls, ID, and John Z. (Sandra) Maggart of Greensboro, NC; sister, Linda (Steven) McGann of Signal Mountain, TN; and several nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Donald R. Fogle; and sisters, Marilyn Stieglitz and Mary McKillip.

The family will receive visitors from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm on Tuesday, August 30, 2022, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, IN.
