Ya Wanna Bet?

funny-stone-park-written-carved-150x1501Think About It.  Ya Wanna bet? Talk about a misspent youth.  Having indulged in the game of  bridge since I was a teen, it had never occurred to me that I might be arrested, maybe jailed, for benignly shuffling, dealing, playing, maybe even winning at the game.  That was until one of our players put a twenty on the table for the waitress.  An alert lady at the table quickly questioned the wisdom of risking being accused of gambling by a passing law officer.  Gambling is illegal in this state, you know. It’s true that the Government or the approved organization spends obscene amounts of money reminding you to GAMBLE responsibly.  But that’s all right I guess, since the State wins some of the losses to use for education or something.

Now, as I understood it when I was young,  gambling was immoral.  That’s why, in many parts of the country constituent-fearing legislators fought for bills to defend your right to prevent others from wagering their children’s food money on a game of chance.  Even though I disagree with the premise, I sort of get the idea that gambling can cause an imbalance in the family budget.

What I don’t understand is how the elected offspring of those men (Women couldn’t vote then.) can now promote the very vice once banned.  Although I do notice they don’t allow automobile purchases on Sunday in this state either.

Keep in mind you chose these people who passed these absurdities or allowed laws like these to remain enforceable.

Consider:

  • Mustaches are illegal if the bearer has a tendency to habitually kiss other humans.
  • Pedestrians crossing the highway at night are prohibited from wearing tail lights.
  • Hotel sheets must be exactly 99 inches long and 81 inches wide.
  • Baths may not be taken between the months of October and March.

And if you were thinking of catching a fish with your bare hands, forget it.  Illegal.  Oh, there are lots more; and this state is not alone.  Choose your favorite.

This legislative nonsense can’t help but remind you  of TOBAL.  Next time you even remotely consider the possibility of challenging anyone about anything, just don’t say Ya Wanna Bet?  Think About It.
