Devota Maxine (Scott) Smith, 93 formerly of Andrews passed away at 11:16 am on Thursday, April 14, 2016 at Norwood Health & Rehabilitation Center. Devota was a 1941 graduate of Andrews High School. During her long and blessed life she was a busy woman, working in and outside of home. She was employed in the cafeteria at Andrews High School, in the office at Schenkel’s Dairy, clerical at Keefer’s Greenhouse and at the Public Library, both in Andrews. During the 1950’s she was an Avon Lady selling cosmetics. As a child she lived through the great depression and WWII. She was raised in a God fearing home and attended the First Church of the Nazarene in Huntington and the Andrews Pilgrim Holiness Church. She became a member of the Andrews United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school, held offices and sang in the choir. Devota always kept her devotional magazine, The Upper Room, beside her spot on the couch. She was an avid reader, played piano and accordion, enjoyed playing cards, listening to music (Andy Williams) and listening to WOWO’s Little Red Barn, Cubs and Reds baseball games on the radio. She enjoyed TV shows too: The Waltons, Johnny Carson, Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy and IU basketball. For a number of years she played on a woman’s softball team in Andrews. She enjoyed playing ball outside with her family. She also enjoyed picnics, parties, gardening, entertaining and vacationing. Devota loved people and had many friends. She belonged to various clubs and organizations, including The Eastern Star and the Andrews Home Economics Club. Devota will be sorely missed, “a jewel on earth and a jewel in Heaven”. In many ways through acts of love and kindness, she kept family together, babysitting, surrogate parenting and leading by example.

Devota was born on February 25, 1923 at home in Andrews, the daughter of Byron and Edith (Anderson) Scott. Devota was the oldest of three children.

She was united in marriage to Nathan “Pete” Smith on June 22, 1941 in Huntington County. He preceded her in death on June 20, 1995 after 54 years of marriage. They resided in Andrews, except during WWII when they lived in Florida, Tennessee and Missouri.

Survivors include two sons: Bill Smith of Andrews; Rodger (Betty) Smith of Marion; five grandchildren: Kelly Boylan-Trieglaff of Fort Wayne, Debbie Kaufman of Fort Wayne, Christy Huntington of Georgia, Scott Smith of Huntington and Jason Smith of Colorado, 16 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren.
