Ray was born in Redbank, New Jersey to the late Walter Ray and Phyllis (Zorn) Lockwood. He was able to travel one last time to Orlando where he spent his final days with his family.
After receiving his bachelor’s degree from Ball State University Ray accepted his first teaching position at Salem Center High School in Steubin County. In 1962 he accepted a teaching position with Marion Community Schools where he enthusiastically taught social studies and history at McCulloch and Justice. He earned his masters degree in education in 1964 and eventually left the class room and began his career in administration for the school system, retiring in 1997. There are countless former students that will always remember Mr. Lockwood as one of their favorite teachers. Whether he was making a history fact easy to remember or planning and chaperoning a Washington D.C. eighth grade trip, he always made learning exciting.
On March 6, 1965 he married Frances Schweitzer. This year they celebrated 53 wonderful years. Mrs. Lockwood survives in their Marion home.
Ray was active in community service with membership in the morning Exchange Club where he formally served as president. He was an avid coin collector and served as President and Governor of the Indiana State Numismatic Association. He was a life member of Central States Numismatic Society, a member of the Marion, Muncie and Anderson Coin Clubs, Royal Canadians Numismatic Association and honorary life member of the Michigan State Numismatic Association. After his retirement in 1997 Ray began working as a volunteer at Marion General Hospital. In his free time Ray and Fran enjoyed traveling the globe visiting historical places where they made many friendships. Ray was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend.
Ray is also survived by two children, Karen Kay (Dan) Taylor, Hilliard, Ohio; Mark A. Lockwood, Gas City; sister, Jill Anne (Charles) Price, Waukesha, Wisconsin; 6 grand children, Chris Taylor, Ezekiel Lockwood, Andrew Taylor, Weston Lockwood, Kirsten Lockwood and Alyssa Lockwood.
