Shirley R. Cox

Shirley R. Cox, age 90, of Huntington, died at 4:15 p.m. Friday, December 28, 2018 at Heritage Pointe of Huntington.

Visitation will be from 3 – 7 p.m. Thursday, January 3, 2019 at Bailey-Love Mortuary, 35 West Park Drive, Huntington, Indiana 46750. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial will be in Six Mile Cemetery in Wells County at a later date.

Preferred memorials are to United Brethren in Christ Global Ministries, in care of Bailey-Love Mortuary, 35 West Park Drive, Huntington, Indiana, 46750.

Shirley was born on November 6, 1928 in Howell, Michigan, the daughter of Glen C. and Lillian M. (Latsch) Betterly. She grew up in Stevensville and North Bruce, Ontario, Canada. She graduated from Port Elgin High School in Ontario in 1947 and married Emmett D. Cox on August 14, 1948 in North Bruce; he preceded her in death on July 9, 2015 after 66 years of marriage. She was a 1951 graduate of Huntington College and worked for Savings and Loan Bank in Glendale, California for four years. She taught in schools in Kansas, California, Ohio, and Sierra Leone, West Africa, and was a substitute teacher for Huntington County Community School Corporation as well as Mercer and Van Wert County school systems, retiring in 1993. Shirley was a member of New Hope Church of the Brethren in Christ in Huntington, where she was a life member of the Women’s Missionary Fellowship. She loved to read and she excelled at baking pies.

Survivors include a son, Douglas W. (Rebecca) Cox of Roanoke, a daughter Darlene J. (Dennis) Salway of Willshire, Ohio, a foster son, Billy K. (Vida) Simbo of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, nine grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and a great-great grandchild. Also surviving are brothers Donald M. (Barbara) Betterly of Huntington and Sheldon R. (Peggy) Betterly of Nokesville, Virginia and a sister, Dorothy (Herbert) Tripp of Ossian. Her parents, husband, and a daughter, Dianne L. Cox precede her in death.
