Roy E. Thompson

Roy E. Thompson, 87, Sweetser, went to be with the Lord at 7:05 p.m. on Thursday, September 20, 2018, at Colonial Oaks Health Care Center in Marion.  He was born in Carter County, Kentucky, on July 31, 1931, to the late Wilford and Mary (Wilkinson) Thompson.  He married Betty Dick on May 8, 1952, and she preceded him in death in March of 1994.  He married his second wife, Sylvia Lines, on June 24, 1995, and she survives.

Roy was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving four years and during the Korean War.  Following his military service, he worked with Marion Community Schools as a janitor from the 1970s until 2009.  He also worked as a rewinder for over 30 years at Essex Wire, from where he retired in 1994.  He had maintained two to three jobs at a time for many years.

The most important thing in Roy’s life was worshiping the Lord.  He attended First Pentecostal Church in Marion, where he served on the Board for the last 20 years.  He enjoyed woodworking and fishing, and he especially enjoyed good cook-outs and eating pie.  Next to the Lord, family was of utmost importance.  He loved them dearly and treasured all the times he could spend with them.

He is survived by his children, Vicki (Jesse) Belcher, Fairmount, Cindy (David) Lines, Converse, Brian (Cheryl) Thompson, Dallas, Georgia, and Adreannea (Rob Fern) Thompson, Sweetser; grandchildren, Jennifer McZegle, Christy (Rock) Rockwell, Corey Belcher, Kelly (Jeff) Danner, Candace Alva, Caleb Lines, Jacob Lines, Elizabeth (Chris) Tucker, Malachi Thompson, and Brayson Fern; 16 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.

The family will receive visitors from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, September 22, 2018, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, IN.

Services to celebrate Roy’s life will be held at 12 noon on Sunday, September 23, 2018, at First Pentecostal Church, 1116 S. Pennsylvania St., Marion, IN.  Pastor Darrin Williams will be officiating with burial following at Grant Memorial Park.
