Mazie Mae Melton, 83, passed away on Sunday, September 3, 2023 at Blair Ridge Health Campus in Peru, surrounded by her loving family.
Mazie was born on June 1, 1940 in Byrdstown, Tennessee to Virgil Dennis Gunter and Esta Ola (Clayborn) Gunter. She married Jesse A. Melton on June 30, 1956 and they shared 62 years of marriage before his passing on January 29, 2019.
Mazie loved to fish, woodworking, and mushroom hunt with her beloved husband, children, and grandchildren. She also really enjoyed quilting.
She is survived by her children: Gary Melton of Louisiana, Richard (Jody) Melton of Milford, Indiana, Karen (Jeff) Maggart of Akron, Indiana, and Kim Melton of Bunker Hill, Indiana. Also grandchildren: Shanna (Josh), Rochelle (Matt), Jessica (Levi), Amanda (Richie), Annie (fiancé MJ), Adam (fiancé Logan), Josie, Seth, Angie (Justin), Ashlyn, Kaelyn (Wyatt) , and Mason; and great-grandchildren: Hope, Gracie, Chelsea, Gunnar, Xander, Baylee, Izzy, London, Paris, Morgan, Maddie, Makenna, Tori, Jenna, Adaline, and Jameson. Surviving in addition to her children and grandchildren are brothers, Bill Gunter and Tom Gunter, and sister, Estelle Scott, all of Tennessee.
Mazie was preceded in death by her husband Jesse, her parents, a daughter Kathy Sommers, grandson Jeremy Love, and great-grandchildren Elizabeth Easterday and Beau Melton and a brother Bob Gunter.
Visitation will be held from 11am-1pm on Friday, September 8, 2023 at Flowers-Leedy Funeral Home, 105 West Third Street, Peru, Indiana. Funeral service will follow at 1pm with Pastor: Dustin Smith officiating. Burial will take place at Mount Hope Cemetery in Peru, Indiana.
