Max E. Smith

Max E. Smith, 89, of Fairmount, Indiana, died Monday, May 14, 2018, at Rolling Meadows Health Care in LaFontaine, Indiana, after a long illness.
Max was born in Fairmount Township, Indiana, on September 7, 1928, son of the late Leath and Inez (Kimes) Smith. Max graduated from high school in 1946. He married Mary L. Ryder on January 22, 1950. Max retired in 1981 from General Motors where he had worked for 32 years as a tool maker. Prior to working at GM, Max worked as a farmer for six years and then a few years at RCA. Max was a member of the Fairmount Masonic Lodge #635 of Fairmount, Ft. Wayne Valley Scottish Rite, and the Mizpah Shrine Temple, and he also attended Fairmount Wesleyan Church. Max enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and traveling with his wife and family.
Max is survived by Mary, his loving wife of 68 years; daughter, Teri (David) Gray, LaFontaine; 5 grandchildren; Angie (Gene) Brown, Brad Floyd, Stacie (Jerry) Luna, Mason (Amber) Gray, and Katy Gray; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Along with his parents, Max was preceded in death by his daughter, Nora Haisley; brothers, Phillip and Robert Smith; and sister Doris Alter.
Arrangements are being handled by the Fairmount Chapel of Armes-Hunt Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 415 S. Main Street, Fairmount, Indiana, where a visitation will be held on Thursday, May 17, 2018, from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. with a Masonic Service at 4:45 p.m. A funeral service celebrating Max’s life will follow the Masonic Service at 5:00 p.m. with Pastor Rob Tippey officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriner’s Hospital or to Rolling Meadows of LaFontaine in care of the funeral home.
