John Robert Kirby, 81, Huntington, passed away at 4:30 am on Thursday, October 14, 2021. He was born in Marion, Indiana, on Monday, February 26, 1940, to Robert and Martelle (Thomas) Kirby. On June 9, 1962, he married Patricia “Pat” K. Stratton, and she survives.
John graduated from Marion High School and proudly served in the U.S. Navy and Guard. He loved telling stories about his time in the Navy. Following his military service, he worked at Foster-Forbes for 36 years. He was a draftsman and had drawn many house plans over the years. He especially loved woodworking. With his wife, Pat, he worked with the children’s ministries for several years at Eastgate Community Church.
John loved traveling, especially to North Carolina to visit family. He was also an avid Colts fan and enjoyed spending time reading and watching war movies. He will be remembered for his great sense of humor and for how much he loved being with his family and friends.
In addition to his loving wife, Pat, survivors include his children, Tammy (Gary) Duckett of Huntington, Jim (Wanita) Kirby of Mt. Etna, and Jennifer (Steve) Wayman of Marion; step-children, Nate (Audrey) Wayman, Stephanie (Jamey) Booher, and Matthew Wayman; grandchildren, Kyle (Betty) Duckett, Brandon (Alexis) Kirby, Caleb (Laura) Duckett, Samantha (Kevin) Powell, and Jonah Kirby, great-grandchildren, Daxton and Dessa Kirby, Addison Kirby, and Nevaeh, Nyren, Everly and AJ Powell; sister, JoAnne Hartman; and brother, Richard (Kathy) Kirby.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Bill Harman.
The family will receive visitors from 9:00 am to 11:00 am on Saturday, October 16, 2021, at Eastgate Community Church, 825 S. Pennsylvania St., Marion, IN.
Immediately following the time of visitation, a service to celebrate John’s life will begin at 11:00 am. Pastor Nate Wayman will be officiating with burial taking place at Estates of Serenity.
