James H. “Perk” Perkins

James H. “Perk” Perkins, 83, Marion, passed away at 12:08 pm on Wednesday, July 27, 2022, in his home in Marion. He was born in Marion, Indiana, on Thursday, August 18, 1938, to James and Alice (Butler) Perkins. On September 3, 1960, he married Norma J. Browner, and she preceded him in death in 1992. On October 29, 1994, he married Marilyn L. Morse, who survives. 

James graduated from Marion High School’s Class of 1956 and attended Ball State University. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged. Following his military service, James was a police officer for 20 years with the Marion Police Department, retiring in 1985. That same year, he worked for Marion Community Schools Corp. as the attendance compliance officer until 2005. He was a former member of Marion Community Schools Board, Board of Works, FOP, American Legion #166, Bethel AME Board of Trustees and Finance Committee, and a friend of House of Worship for All People. 

James enjoyed golfing and playing in local tournaments. He also participated on bowling leagues and regularly worked out at the YMCA. Most of all, he enjoyed time spent with his grandchildren. 

Survivors include his son, Peter “Pete” (Nita) Perkins of Indianapolis; daughter, Teresa (Andre) Miles of Indianapolis; sisters, Sheila (Robert) Casey, Sandra (Thomas) Nukes, Tanya Clemens, and Alicia Gulliford, all of Marion; grandson, Tyler Barrett; and granddaughters, Kylie Barrett, Jordan Barrett, Brynna Barrett, Tiffany Perkins, Andrea Perkins, and Peyton Perkins. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, James H. Perkins, Sr., and Alice Marie Perkins; his loving wife, Norma J. (Browner) Perkins; brothers-in-law, Edward Clemens and Carlyle “Chico” Gulliford; and his fur baby, Bailey. 

The family will receive visitors from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on Friday, August 5, 2022, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, IN. 

Immediately following the time of visitation, a funeral service to celebrate James’ life will begin at 1:00 pm. Burial will take place at Grant Memorial Park.
