Jama K. Walters, 62, peacefully passed away in Pierceton on August 6, 2018 while vacationing with her best friends, Julie (Greg) Ulrich and Mary Anderson.
She was born on June 16, 1956, to the late John F. and Jane W. Walters. Jama was a 1975 graduate of Marion High School and went on to begin her career in Grant County government after graduation. From 1998-2008 she served as the center township assessor, having previously worked in the office since 1975.
Jama was an active member in the Republican Women from 1975-2018 and completed terms in all offices. In 1986 she was honored as the Indiana Republican Women honoree. She served as a precinct committeewoman for 20 years and was active in and honored as the “Woman of the Year” by the ABWA. Jama belonged to the Indiana Township Assessors Association, Women of the Moose, America Legion Auxiliary and Marion General Hospital Auxiliary. Jama was very grateful and proud to say she was a 12-year cancer survivor.
In her free time Jama enjoyed visiting Matter Park nearly every day where she fed squirrels and birds. She also was a voracious reader and for the past few years discovered she had a talent for painting.
She is survived by her siblings, Lana (John) Stuber, Warren; J. David (Kayla) Walters, Marion; Jay K. (Jerry) Walters, Viera, Florida; Jan A. (Teresa) Walters, Fort Wayne; Joe H. (Aurora) Walters, Bremen; aunt, Kay Wildoner; a host of cousins, nieces and nephews. Jama so loved her fur babies, Suzy Q. and Sassy Su, and they survive.
In accordance with Jama’s wishes she will be cremated. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 9, 2018, in Owen-Weilert-Duncan Funeral Home, Marion Chapel, 2722 S. Washington St., Marion, Indiana. Jama’s brother, Jan, will have a time for sharing beginning at 6:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be directed to Grant County Humane Society, 505 S.
