Jackie “Jack” McCarter

Jackie “Jack” McCarter, 87, Greentown, passed away at 11:45 am on Thursday, December 28, 2023, at Miller’s Merry Manor in Marion. He was born in Red Boiling Springs, Tennessee, on Wednesday, March 25, 1936, to Irvin and Ollie (Leath) McCarter.  On December 15, 1955, he married Shirley F. Binnion, and she preceded him in death. He was a loving husband to Shirley.
 
Jack worked for John Deere from 1960-2006. He loved to work and, when he wasn’t working, was helping farmers or was tinkering around in the garage. He was the Swayzee Town Marshal around 1973 and Deputy Marshal in 1967. He also worked in civil defense for 25 years and drove ambulance in the National Guard. Jack loved coaching Little League baseball in Sweetser, Swayzee, and Converse. He was a member of the Country Swingers Square Dancing Club in Somerset.   


Jack started hanging out at Tootsie’s, where he met Marty Robbins, Minnie Pearl, Waylon Jennings, Little Jimmy Dickens, Porter Wagner, Dolly Parton, and Hank Snow. He took care of the horses of Hank Williams and Bill Monroe and had dinner with Johnny Cash and Loretta Lynn in their homes.


Survivors include his daughters, Renita Rowland of Marion, Connie (Terry) Hall of Delphi, and Bonnie (Chuck) Hurst of West Lafayette; sons, Anthony “Tony” McCarter of Anderson and David (Lauren) McCarter of Pahrump, NV; sister, Linda Ross; brother, Tommy McCarter; and over 40 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.


He was also preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Marcia L. Ayers; brother, Roy McCarter; sisters, Peggy Harris and Patsy Brown; son-in-law, Stanley Rowland; grandson, Terry Clingerman, II; granddaughter, Samantha A. Ayers; and great-grandsons, Xzavier Rowland and William Rowland.


The family will receive visitors from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Friday, January 5, 2024, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral & Cremation Service, Rybolt Chapel, 314 N. Washington St., Swayzee, IN.


On Saturday, January 6, 2024, a service to celebrate Jack’s life will begin at 10:00 am with Pastor Tom Mansbarger officiating.  Burial will take place at Thrailkill Cemetery.
