Glen Harris Weiland

Glen Harris Weiland, age 87, of Marion, passed away peacefully at Wesleyan Health & Rehabilitation Center on the morning of Sunday, February 19, 2023.

He was born to Harry Weiland and Eunice (Brown) Weiland on January 13, 1936, in Baraboo, Wisconsin.

After graduating from Reedsburg High School, Glen moved away from Rock Springs, Wisconsin-where his family lived-to attend Taylor University and then Anderson University before earning a degree in electrical engineering from Purdue University in 1960. On April 9th of that year, he married Peggy Joan West. They were married for 53 years before she went home to the Lord in June of 2013.

After college graduation and marriage, he registered for the United States Air Force where he served as Airman Third Class for six years. Glen and Peggy then moved to Colorado where he endured basic training and prepared for deployment to Germany in response to the Berlin Crisis. Through circumstance he was not deployed and the two returned to Indiana where, shortly after, Peggy gave birth to their firstborn son, Timothy.

Glen spent the majority of his career as an electrical engineer working for AEP. After 38 years of employment, he retired and maintained a number of contacts for freelance work to keep busy.

He was an active volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. Always eager to give a helping hand as an electrician and handyman, he worked on over 20 homes and was instrumental in finding volunteers to assist him, often finding students to teach the trade.

He and Peggy were faithful churchgoers. As an usher and trustee of College Wesleyan Church, he was loyal in attendance and regimented in his task. He possessed a quiet faith throughout his life, expressed in abundant service to others and shared with only the closest confidants.

Work was a passion for Glen. However, he also savored reading, gardening, puzzles, and playing games with his family. Socially, he was also a frequent attendant of Cowboy Church and enjoyed going to concerts and other live events.

As a husband, Glen was hard-working and devoted. When Peggy was diagnosed with cancer, he spent the final two years of her life by her side, ensuring her comfort and caring for her physical needs.

He was a good father who quietly portrayed strength in life and dedication to the task at hand. He loved playing games and wrestling with his ten (now eleven!) grandchildren, and always had a small prank up his sleeve for any of them who passed too closely. It was a joy for him to see seven great-grandchildren born before he went home to the Lord.

He is survived by his children, Tim (Sheila) Weiland of Marion, Jeff (Ann Marie) Weiland of Knightstown, Alicia (Chris) Clark of LaOtto, and Rebecca (Phil) Meek of Marion; and his grandchildren, Abigail (Ryan) Sjostrom, Taylor (Meredith) Frymier, Kathleen (Zach) Mullen, Andrew (Cecilia) Weiland, Lake (A’ja) Clark, Stephen (Haley) Weiland, Rachel (Remy) Perrin, Camille Clark (Zach Parks), Shelby Meek (Ben Evenson), Michael Weiland (Hayley McCleod), and Daisy Weiland; and his great grandchildren, Ellery Sjostrom, Britta Sjostrom, Isaac Mullen, Addelyn Weiland, Maeve Frymier, Emerson Clark, and Clara Sjostrom. He is also survived by his sisters, Lois Holmes of Anderson and Gloria Boruff of Missouri; and, brother- and sisters-in-law, Pat (Bob) Mundy of Indianapolis, Paul (Linda) West of Indianapolis, and Cheryl West-England (Ethan) of Greenwood, Indiana, and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father and mother, Harry and Eunice Weiland; his sister, Marilyn Rogers; and his wife of 53 years, Peggy Weiland.
