George Roy Woodcox, Jr.

George Roy Woodcox, Jr., 87, of Gas City, passed away on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, at Marion Health. He was born in Gas City, Indiana, on Saturday, October 26, 1935, to George Roy Woodcox, Sr., and Cleo Amanda (McAfferty) Woodcox.  

George graduated from Mississinewa High School and served in the U.S. Army for six years as a helicopter mechanic. While stationed in Germany, George met the love of his life.  On April 11, 1957, George married Maria Schachner.

George and Maria traveled back to Gas City, Indiana, to raise their three sons. They attended New Hope Baptist Church, where he accepted the Lord and was baptized.  He retired from General Motors after serving 33 years, and he was a member of the UAW.

George was a motorcycle enthusiast.  He spent hours working on bikes in his garage and taking long rides across the country.  He also loved NASCAR racing.  During the winter months in Indiana, he and his wife, Maria, would escape to Ocala, Florida.  They spent over 25 years enjoying walks on the beach and time with family.  George loved his family and three sons.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 66 years, Maria Woodcox of Gas City; sons, Tommy (Susan) Woodcox of Gas City, Jim (Barbara) Woodcox of Charleston, SC, and Steve (Scarlett) Woodcox of Charleston, SC; three grandchildren, Jayson Woodcox, Brandon Woodcox, and Patrick Mitchell; and five great-grandchildren, Dillon, Tyler, Raylee, Maria, and Miles.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Cleo Woodcox.

The family will receive visitors from 9:30 am to 11:30 am on Friday, May 5, 2023, at New Hope Baptist Church, 800 E. S. C St., Gas City, IN.

Immediately following the time of visitation, a service to celebrate George’s life will begin at 11:30 am with Pastor Mick Simpkins officiating. Burial will take place at Marion National Cemetery.
