George Robert Smith, 68, Marion, passed away at 12:33 pm on Monday, January 1, 2024, at Lutheran Hospital of Indiana in Fort Wayne. He was born in Marion, Indiana, on Sunday, September 4, 1955, to George and Guinevere (Whelchel) Smith.
He worked as a fork lift driver at General Tire and retired from there. He also served 30 years on the Center Township Fire Dept until he retired. He was a member of the Eagles and was an avid Harley-Davidson rider and collector. He enjoyed taking his hot rod truck to car shows. He liked hunting, fishing and going to the pool hall and playing pool on the weekends.
Survivors include his daughter, Misty (Jamie) Burnham of Wabash; son, Aaron Smith of Marion; grandchildren, Courtney Smith, Brandon (Ashley) Fultz, Andruw (Chloe) Cruz, Hannah Smith, Bentley Smith; great-grandchildren, Caroline, Charlotte, Ryder, Lydia; special friends, Cheryl Gary, Michael Spinner; and former wife, Margaret Strayer-Smith.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Guinevere Smith.
The family will receive visitors from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm on Saturday, January 6, 2024, at Gas City First Baptist Church, 204 E. S. A St., Gas City, IN.
Immediately following the time of visitation, a service to celebrate George’s life will begin at 3:00 pm with Pastor Lester Jeffries and Chaplain Mark Storey officiating.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral & Cremation Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, IN 46952 and in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed there.
