Garl E Carmichael, age 96, of Marion, passed away on Thursday, June 15, 2023 at Marion Health.
Garl was born on April 30, 1927 in Marion, Indiana, the son of the late Fred and Ruth (Carl) Carmichael. He married Harriett Russell on December 25, 1949, and she survives.
Garl was a 1945 graduate of Marion High School and then attended Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Georgia. He served 5 years in the United States Marine Corp. during WWII and Korea Police Action.
Garl worked at the Marion Chronicle Tribune for 50 years, retiring in December 1993. He also volunteered at Marion General Hospital for 10 years. He was a member of First Christian Church and served as Secretary of the Local 130 Pressmen’s Union for 15 years. He enjoyed family, friends, square dancing, walking, gardening, and bird watching.
He is survived by his wife, Harriett Carmichael; his children, Patrick of Marion, David of West Lafayette, and Janet (Rick) Jones of Goshen; his brother, J of Oklahoma; grandchildren, Eric (Tara) of Knox, Corey of Marion, Adam of Goshen, and Alex (Emily) of Elkhart; great-grandchildren, Makena (Dawson) of Goshen, and Brevin of Ft. Wayne; and great-great grandchildren, Kali and Casen.
He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Dale, Laurel, and Ferris; a sister, Anna Mae Anderson, and a daughter, JoAnn.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 21, 2023 at Raven Choate Robinson Funeral Home, 1202 W. Kem Road, Marion, Indiana. Funeral Services will begin at 3:00 p.m.
