Della M. Lockridge, 99, Jonesboro, passed away at 1:10 am on Tuesday, June 28, 2022, at University Nursing Center in Upland. She was born in Jonesboro, Indiana, on Tuesday, May 8, 1923, to Elijah and Georgia (Jones) Rice. In 1945, she married Sylvester “Shorty” Lockridge, and he preceded her in death in 1974.
Della graduated from Jonesboro High School and worked for Wesleyan Headquarters until she retired. In her younger years she enjoyed traveling with her husband “Shorty”. She was a lifelong member of Main Street Wesleyan Church. She enjoyed going to church, being around children and volunteering at the IWU mail room. She cared for many children over the years.
Survivors include her sister, Marjorie Leckron of Jonesboro; and step-granddaughter, Jamie (Mark) Shertzer; step-grandson, Jeff Lockridge; and dear friend, Virginia Lockridge.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Elijah and Georgia Rice; husband, Sylvester “Shorty” Lockridge; sisters, Dorris Leffler, Barbanel Vernmilion, Emmagene Slater; brother, Frank M. Rice; step-son, Jim Lockridge.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt “thank you” to her sister, nieces, nephews, special neighbors, and many dear friends who cared for her these last few years.
The family will receive visitors from 11am to 1 pm on Tuesday, July 5, 2022 at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, Storey Chapel, 400 E. Main St., Gas City, IN.
Immediately following the time of visitation, a Funeral Service to celebrate Della’s life will begin at 1 pm with Pastor Bob Streeter officiating. Burial will take place at Riverside Cemetery.
