Carolyn R. Shinn

Carolyn R. Shinn, 84, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 15, 2018, at Colonial Oaks Healthcare in Marion. Carolyn was born on May 19, 1933, to the late Abraham and Margaret Delight (Presnall) Richey in Grant County. Carolyn graduated from Swayzee High School in 1951. She then married John Shinn later that year and he survives. She worked on the farm with John for 55 years before retiring. Carolyn was a very active member of the Swayzee United Methodist Church, where she was a youth leader, Sunday School teacher, and ran vacation Bible School. She was also a member of the PTA of her kids’ schools, Liberty Franklin Friendship Club, Farm Bureau, Advanced Agricultural Farm Club, and a euchre club. Carolyn cared deeply about people. She would help care for the local sick, take those who were unable to their treatments and appointments, and she would donate and deliver food and clothing for the needy.
In addition to her husband, John, Carolyn is survived by two daughters, Carol Elaine (Steve) Berry, Marion, and Nancy Jo (Anthony) Anderson, Noblesville; son-in-law, Mark (Diane) Stanley, Rushville; nine grandchildren, Jay (Angela) Berry, Amy (Jason) Metzger, Stephanie (Nathan) Sherrill, Brittney (Colin) Bell, Brian Anderson, Sarah (Jeremy) Day, John Robert (Kayla) Stanley, Amy (Chris) Greenwell, and Ben (Erin) Gettinger; twelve great-grandchildren, Gia Berry, Madison Metzger, Braelynn Metzger, McKinleigh Sherrill, Zoey Sherrill, William Bell, Mary Colin Bell, Hadley Stanley, Evan Greenwell, Andrew Greenwell, Jack Gettinger, and Emily Gettinger; brother, George (Catherine) Richey; three brothers-in-law, William (Carolee) Shinn, Fort Wayne, Robert Shinn, Cleveland, OH, and Richard Knost, Marion; and sister-in-law, Jane (Tim) Mock, Houston, TX. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Brookdale, Colonial Oaks, and Heart to Heart Hospice.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Abraham and Delight Richey; daughter, Sue Ann Stanley; granddaughter, Jennifer Berry; and two sisters-in-law, Sudie Shinn and Phyllis Knost.
Arrangements for Carolyn have been entrusted to Armes-Hunt Funeral Home and Cremation Services College Park Chapel, 4601 S. Western Ave., Marion, Indiana 46953. A visitation will be held on Friday, May 18, 2018, from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Swayzee United Methodist Church, 101 W. Madison St., Swayzee, Indiana 46986. A funeral service celebrating Carolyn’s life will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. with Pastors Michael Murell and Mark Stanley officiating. Burial will follow at Grant Memorial Park.
