Burton “Burt” C. Dicus

Burton “Burt” C. Dicus, 93, of Swayzee, devoted his life to caring for others. Burton loved travel, literature, history, music, and culture. He had a far-ranging mind and a passion for knowledge and ideas. He was a lover of the natural world, revering its ecological and spiritual value.

Burt graduated from Swayzee High School in 1947, where he was the senior vice-president, senior play cast, and on staff of the yearbook and the “Mercury.” He graduated from Indiana University and earned a Master’s degree from Ball State University.

Burt entered education after an early career at Dana Corporation. He taught for 27 years at Swayzee and Oak Hill high schools. He was Teacher of the Year (’72-’73) of the State of Indiana. Burt taught Adult Bible Study for years. His guidance (and the rigor of his teaching) is remembered fondly by many in the community.

Burt is preceded in death by his parents, Monelle Conkling Dicus and Thurman Albert Dicus; sister, Mardelle Dicus Lehe; and long-time friend, Beverly Sheline.

He is survived by his nephews, Robert Tad (Marcia) Lehe and Tom (Joyce) Lehe; great-nieces and great-nephews, Katherine, Jonathan, Jennifer, and David, and their families. Burton loved and was loved by cousins, friends, and neighbors too numerous to name, and the family is grateful for all their companionship and support over the years.

The family will receive visitors from 11:00 am to 12:00 noon on Thursday, June 2, 2022, at Swayzee Christian Church, 110 N. Washington St., Swayzee, IN 46986.
