M. Charles “Chuck” Smith, 76, Jonesboro, died at 9:26 a.m. on Sunday, July 24, 2016, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne. He was born in Indianapolis to the late Menlo and Claire (Reynolds) Smith. He married Phyllis Hardacre on February 5, 1960, and she survives.

Chuck was employed at Foster Forbes for 35 years where he held many positions. He was on the first Board of Works in Jonesboro under Mayor Dwayne Kelley. He also served on the Parks Board and the Civic Committee. He was a 37-year member of the Jonesboro Volunteer Fire Department.

Chuck retired to Florida. He loved his antique cars, especially his ’30 Dodge. He also loved playing cards with his special friends. Chuck enjoyed fishing with the “Soultz Boys” (you know who you are). He enjoyed spending time at the Gas City Speedway with his many friends, especially his two special friends, Jiggs Thomason and Phil Canaday. He also loved his dogs, Molly and Penny Jean.

In addition to his wife of 56 years, Charles is survived by his daughters, Kim (Carlos) Jacobson and Melissa Hunter; son-in-law, Arthur Phillippe; Nancy Hunter, a.k.a. his 2nd wife; grandchildren, Rhamey Furnish, Ryan (Janelle) Dilts, Seth (Amanda) Hunter, Samantha Hunter, Nicholas Jackson, and Baily Montgomery; great-grandchildren, Kaleigh Dilts, Candace Bartholomew, Tyler Dilts, Jordin Columbus, Evan Shane, Gage Dilts, Trinity Haynes, Brady Augusta, and Tucker Bryant; sister, Martha Harris; niece, Martha (Henry) Hittle; nephew, Charles (Jane) Reed; and goddaughter, Kelsey Johanning.

Chuck was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Kelly Dilts Storey; grandson, James Warner; and granddaughter, Rikki Dilts Shane.

Friends and family may call from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, July 28, 2016, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, Storey Chapel, 400 E. Main St., Gas City, IN.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, July 29, 2016, at the funeral home, with Pastor Ken Dykhoff officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery.
