Lester Raymond Stout, age 99, of rural Peru, Indiana passed away at 7:30 AM on March 9, 2016 at Bickford Assisted Living in Wabash, IN. He was born on September 11, 1916 to Mary Frantz Stout and Clifford Stout, Waltz Twp., Wabash. Lester graduated from Somerset High School in 1934. After graduation he was employed at the Wabash County Farm Bureau Cooperative and later became manager at the Treaty Coop Elevator. In preparation for the operation of the REMC, which turned on the first section of service North of Wabash on Christmas Eve, December 1937, Lester was one of several young men who taught others how to wire farm buildings using the proper size and materials. He married Lois Butt of rural Peru on April 18, 1940. He served with the U.S. Army in Europe for three years during World War II. After returning home from the war, he and his wife became Miami County farmers, moving to the Charles Butt farm in Erie Township. He and his wife were Miami County 4-H leaders and active in Farm Bureau Inc. They also helped organize the Erie Township Community Building Board and were instrumental in organizing the fish and tenderloin suppers. Lester was elected to the Peru Community School Board from 1957-1972 and served as vice-president and representative to the vocational school. He taught Sunday School at the Evangelical United Brethren Church, Wabash and later attended Christ United Methodist, Wabash. He enjoyed woodworking and he and his wife built a new home in 1977. Lester was a beloved father and grandfather. He is survived by his son Joe and daughter-in-law Jan, rural Peru, whom he made his home with the past 15 years. Also surviving are grandsons Todd and wife Carolyn of Prosper, Texas and Andrew and wife Lisa of Belize, Central America, 4 great-grandchildren, Brittany (Merritt) Grimm, Longview, Texas, Hayden Stout of Prosper, Texas and Spencer and Andrea Stout of Belize. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lois of 50 Years and three brothers, Kenneth Stout, John Stout and Gene Stout. Funeral services will be Tuesday, March 15, 2016 at 11:00 AM at the Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home, 84 West Main Street, Peru, IN with Pastor Dave Phillips officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Hope Cemetery, Peru. Visitation will be from 9:00-11:00 AM on Tuesday before the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made through the funeral home to the Miami County 4-H and Wabash Friends Church Missions/Stout Belize.
