George M. Denny passed away at his home on Sunday morning November 5, 2017 at 4:15 am. George was born in Royal Center, Indiana on June 1, 1924.
George married Evelyn Snethen in 1943. He received his Honorable Discharge from the Army of the United Stated on January 11, 1946 after serving tours in Europe.
George moved to Peru in 1951 and worked 17 years for local Olin-Mathieson Chemical Corporation plant in various positions including Plant Manager. In 1969, he became the owner/manager of the N & W Dormitory restaurant for 17 years. George was also owner/President of Denny Heavy Equipment, and Miami Rail from 1978 – 1988.
During his tenure in Peru, George received distinguished service awards from Chamber of Commerce and Jaycees. George took an active part in the United Fund from 1957–1968 as division chairman, general chairman, and President in 1968. In 1968 George was named “Man of the Year”. Other community activities include: member of Peru Utilities Board, on the Board of Directors of the YMCA and Salvation Army, and served as an officer or director of the Chamber of Commerce, Peru Manufacturers Association, Rotary Club, and Miami County Heart Association. George was Commander of the American Legion Glen Owens Post #14 for 10 years. George is a life time member of the American Legion and VFW. He also was supportive of the Miami County Historical Society, Inc and the construction of the Peru river walk along the Wabash.
George is survived by long-time companion Gora Campbell, son Dave (and Shelley) Denny of Pinehurst, NC, son Steve (and Cindy) Denny of Peru, daughter Malita (Denny) and Jim Fry of Peru, ten grandchildren, and several great grandchildren. George was preceded in death by son George Jr. who died as an infant.
Calling hours for George will be held on Tuesday November 7, 2017 at 5:00-7:00 pm at Flowers Leedy Funeral Home, 105 West Third Street, Peru, Indiana. Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Wednesday, November 8, 2017 at Flowers Leedy Funeral Home, with Pastor David Duke officiating. George will be buried in Ever Rest Memorial Park with military graveside services provided by the Miami County Military Rites Unit.
