Burl Dean “Jim” Covey, 84, of Huntington, IN, passed away on Tuesday, June 6, 2017, at 10:39 p.m. at his residence.

Mr. Covey was born on May 15, 1933, in Huntington, IN, to Burl A. and Dorothy (Griffith) Covey. His parents preceded him in death. Burl married Katherine Lou Keefer on September 29, 1951. They were married 63 years. She preceded him in death on January 17, 2015.

Mr. Covey attended Huntington Township High School. He worked at the Kmart Distribution Center in Loss Prevention Safety and Security for over 30 years. In the early 90’s he was owner/operator of Burger Dairy Store on Market Street. He also did lawn maintenance at the PAL Club. He enjoyed being an amateur radio operator, and enjoyed woodworking and woodcrafts. He was a member of an amateur radio club in Huntington that he help founded. He and his wife were also members of a CB club for many years.

Survivors include two sons, Arthur Covey of Huntington, IN, Ronald Covey, GA; two daughters, Katherine (Richard) Triplett, Warren, IN, Donna Smith, Arcola, IN; one brother, Thomas F. (Sue) Covey, Huntington, IN; and two sisters, Nancy Butler and Barbara Smith, both of Huntington, IN.   He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and 9 great-great grandchildren.

Along with his wife and parents he was preceded in death by two sons, Larry Covey, Richard Covey; one daughter, Brenda Lou Ryner; and three grandchildren, Jessica Ryner, Greg Ryner and Shane Covey.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, June 11, 2017, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at McElhaney-Hart Funeral Home, 715 N. Jefferson St., Huntington, IN.

Additional calling hours will be Monday, June 12, 2017, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home prior to the service.

Funeral service will be held Monday, June 12, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. at McElhaney-Hart Funeral Home, 715 N. Jefferson St., Huntington, IN, with Pastor Ron Forsythe officiating.

A private burial will be at a later date at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Huntington, IN.

In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the Huntington County Humane Shelter in care of McElhaney-Hart Funeral Home, 715 N. Jefferson Street, Huntington, IN 46750.
