Velma “Jeanie” Scranton Delvin

A bird doesn’t sing because it has the answers. It sings because it has a song, and oh how she sang! Velma “Jeanie” Scranton Delvin passed away Sunday evening at 9:47 p.m. on April 15, 2018, in the presence of loved ones.

Born in Jonesville, Kentucky, on November 19, 1926, she rose far above her humble beginnings and taught herself what others wouldn’t or couldn’t, passing that knowledge on to whomever was willing to listen. Generous to a fault, she gave freely to many a lost soul and stray cat, and, as was often the case, several of each. Full of wit, wisdom, song, dance, and a general joie de vivre, her piercing blue eyes and radiant smile remain indelibly etched in the hearts and minds of those she loved, all better people for having known her.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Harry Turner and Leota Piercefield; her husbands, Charles L. Scranton and James R. Delvin; and her eldest son, Charles L. “Snarky” Scranton.

Survivors include her two eldest children, Charles Michael and Mark Allen Scranton; her grandchildren, Joshua Michael Scranton, Jarrod Curtis Scranton, Jacob Scott Scranton, and Jordan Kayleigh Scranton; 8 great-grandchildren; her best friend, Gisela Whitberg, Germany; and her feline companion of 18 years, Gizmo.

The family will receive visitors from 2-3 p.m. with Velma’s funeral service beginning at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 18, 2018, at Integrity Funeral Care, 2901 S. Washington St., Marion, IN. Pastor Mick Simpkins will be officiating with burial taking place at a later date at Oak Hill Cemetery in Cincinnati, Ohio.
