Peru – Today, the quick actions of an Indiana State Police trooper stopped an opiate overdose of a Kokomo man.

At approximately 12:24 p.m., Miami County Central Dispatch broadcasted a possible drug overdose at a business on 1482 North Eel River Cemetery Road. This is across the road from the Indiana State Police Peru Post. Master Trooper Detective Brent Ingram and Master Trooper Randy Renbarger responded to the call, arriving in approximately two minutes. The officers found Rubean Taylor, 47, Kokomo, IN, lying on the ground, outside of the business. Taylor appeared to be suffering from a severe seizure. He allegedly was overdosing on an opiate pain medication. The officers immediately rendered aide to Taylor. Master Trooper Detective Ingram put recent training to use and administered a nasal spray dose of Narcan (Naloxone) to Taylor. The lifesaving drug stopped the seizure like symptoms and Taylor started breathing normally. Taylor was transported, by ambulance, to a Peru hospital for further treatment. Taylor allegedly worked at the business.

Narcan is a medicine that blocks the effects of opioids and reverses an overdose. After a dose of Narcan, a person who has overdosed on opioids should begin to breathe more normally and it should become easier to wake them up.

Master Trooper Detective Ingram received training and was issued his Narcan kit on July 27, 2016.
