The MSD of Wabash County School Board met to conduct business on Tuesday night.

Donations were approved for a total of $2135.00, along with grants totaling $18,372.86.

I had the opportunity to share several updates, including enrollment numbers for next school year’s preschool programs for both the three-year-olds and four-year-olds programs. As a reminder, registration for the Little Norse and Little Knights Preschool is open and interested families are encouraged to register by March 8. Registration information can be found on the Metro North or Southwood Elementary websites.

Student ADM count across the district has also increased by 50 students from the fall to spring semester.

Dr. Lisa Strieter was announced as the guest speaker for this year’s MSDWC Academic Awards Banquet.

Student & Staff Recognition

Staff and students were recognized from each school.

Several schools recognized their Robotics Teams for recent successes, including teams from Northfield, both Southwood schools, Sharp Creek, and Metro North, who qualified for the State Robotics Meet. 12 of the 14 MSDWC teams qualified for State, which is an outstanding achievement.

Southwood Jr/Sr High

Southwood Junior/Senior High School recognized the students who auditioned and made the Indiana All State Choir.  All five of the students who auditioned made it into the choir.  Because of the pandemic, the number of participants was reduced from 250 to 150, but Southwood had the most students in this area make it to the choir (this area includes six counties). These students are Isaac King, Cage Dubois, Katelyn Ranck, Lyndzey Silvers, Isabel Davis. These students will perform on June 4th at the Palladium in Carmel.

Northfield Jr/Sr High

Northfield Junior/Senior High congratulated the Northfield Girls Basketball Team on a great season. The team won the TRC, Sectional, and Regional and lost a tough one in semi-state.  

Congratulations were also shared to Grant Dale on his TRC and Sectional Championship. Grant swims at the state meet in Indy this Friday. 

Grant Dale was also recognized as his ceramic art piece called “Quarantined MUCH???” was selected as one of five American Visions Nominees for this year. This means that out of 1,410 total works entered in our region, Grant’s work is one of the five “Best-of-Show” works chosen to represent our region at the national level! Congratulations Grant and thank you to Art teacher Adam Zwiebel for all he does to support our artists at NHS.

NHS had two teams qualify for the Indiana VEX Robotics State Remote Skills Championship. The competition will be held remotely on March 6.  Good luck to team members Mason Lyons, Logan Lyons, Neil Long, Hank Gray, Luke Haupert, and Connor Dillingham.

Metro North Elementary

Metro North Elementary congratulated the two Metro North Robotics team for earning two spots at the VEX IQ state robotics meet on March 6.  This is the first time MN has had a qualifying team participate at the state level.  We our proud of our 3rd grade students – Jaymes Slone, Charlotte Harrington, Liam King, Andrew Biehl, Madelynne Foudray, Ryker McKillip, Jackson Renbarger, Cheyanne Wells, Elijah Roark, and Coy Norris.

Principal Moore shared recognition to all our bus drivers, noting some recent praise from student caregivers for the exceptional care our drivers provide to ensuring students’ safety. 

Metro North thanked Amy Schmidt and Erica Tyson and the Southwood Elementary robotics family for organizing and hosting our Wabash County Robotics League.  Due to their hard work, twelve elementary robotics teams were able to compete this season.  

Sharp Creek Elementary

Sharp Creek Elementary recognized their robotics teams who qualify for state. Congratulations to Team A – Kiana Bretzman, Keisha Dacuba, Ashlyn Macy, and Easton McKillip; and also congratulations to Team B – Nate Hodson, Preston Moore, Gavin Lester, Brayden Gidley, Cole Hemingway, Madelyn Holley, and Stella Stephens, as well as coaches Amber and Kevin Bretzman.

Southwood Elementary

Southwood Elementary School congratulate their robotics teams on a tremendous season competing for the first year in our local robotics league.  At the season’s final competition last week the Red Circuit Breakers (4th grade) scored a 1st place finish in the Teamwork Challenge competition, becoming automatic state qualifiers. The Circuit Knights (6th grade team) won the Excellence Award, also becoming automatic state qualifiers, which is the top overall award given to a team at a competition. The Gray Circuit Breakers (5th grade) won the Design Award, given to the team that demonstrates great engineering/design skills.  Due to their high ranking in the state for the Skills scores for the season, the Gray Circuit Breakers and the Circuit Bytes (3rd grade) also earned invitations to the VEX Robotics State Championships.  This virtual event will take place on March 6.  All four teams finished within the top 62 teams (out of nearly 175) in the state with their Skills ranking.  

White’s Jr/Sr High

White’s Jr/Sr High honored Barry Bowyer as an essential part of the school’s success. Mr. Bowyer connects with our students in a manner that is respectful and without any hint of judgement.  

CAR Program

The CAR Program recognized Academic Advisor Jozanna Corn  for the extensive amount of time and organizational efforts it has taken to plan ISTEP testing for our juniors and seniors residing throughout the state of Indiana.
