Susan I. Matchette Wilson

Susan I. Matchette Wilson, 91, Swayzee, passed away on Monday, January 16, 2023, at her residence in Swayzee. She was born in Swayzee, Indiana, on March 20, 1931, to Waldo and Ada (Baker) Matchette.

Susan graduated from Swayzee High School in 1949, where she was a proud cheerleader.  She was runner-up of Mrs. Indiana in the late 1960s and was also Grant County’s first 4-H Queen. After many years of making birthday and wedding cakes, she started her own catering business, At The Gazebo. She was self-taught, with her true passion being that of making and decorating cakes. This passion started when she had made her own wedding cake. She loved making a variety of cakes–birthday, wedding, and celebration. She continued in the business until she couldn’t do it any longer.  She then passed the tradition of cake baking and decorating down to her grandchildren. Susan also taught cooking classes at the YWCA and had an impressive, decorated egg collection.

Susan was also a member of Swayzee United Methodist Church, where she played the organ for decades.  She loved her church and was also actively involved in helping prepare funeral dinners. She was known for her delicious chicken and noodle dinner and white cake.

Survivors include her children, Beth Jones, Brenda Buroker, Chris (Lennie) Wilson, and Steve (Lori) Wilson; grandchildren, Amber (David) Amick, Sara (Aaron) Caudell, Bethany (Brandon) Tinkel, Jessica (Justin) Moore, Lauren Jones, Michelle (Jon) Bills, Layne Blinn, Caroline (Nick) Krinn, and Trevor Wilson; great-grandchildren, Dylan, Dawson, and Abigail Amick, Boston and Bristol Caudell, Quinn Massey, Leighton and Kase Tinkel, Mason and Mia Moore, Mark and Ben Bills, Caiden and Keaton Blinn, Raigen Storer, Harrison Buroker, Kamryn Krinn, and Sadie and Wyatt Jones; sister, Jane Hiatt; brother, John (Jeanette) Matchette; sister-in-law, Sandy Matchette; and special friend, Gary Cunningham.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Howard Wilson; son, Tom Wilson; son-in-law, Brian Buroker; and brother, James Matchette.

The family will receive visitors from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on Friday, January 20, 2023, at Swayzee United Methodist Church, 306 S. Washington St., Swayzee, IN.

Immediately following the time of visitation, a service to celebrate Susan’s life will begin at 1:00 pm with Pastor Jenni Debaun officiating.  Burial will take place at Knox Cemetery in Point Isabel.
