Ruth M. Mitchell

Ruth M. Mitchell, 89, of Carmel, passed away at 4:07 am on Friday, January 5, 2024, at The Restoracy of Carmel. She was born in Jackson, Michigan, on Thursday, January 25, 1934, to John and Vinna (Maloney) Harris. On March 21, 1959, she married Robert M. Mitchell and he preceded her in death on May 9, 2008.


Ruth graduated from Jackson High School in Jackson, MI and received her Bachelor’s Degree in Biblical Studies from Marion College. She went on to receive her Master’s Degree in Library Science from Ball State University. Ruth worked as a librarian for several years with Oak Hill High School.


Ruth was involved in the Indiana State Teachers Association, The National Education Association, and the Pi Lambda Theta Sorority. She was a long-time member of College Wesleyan Church in Marion. Ruth was very active with the Sunday School group and it was a very important part of her life. She enjoyed gardening flowers and vegetables, and liked canning the vegetables that she grew. Ruth loved to travel with her husband, and especially enjoyed her trips to Alaska, Hawaii, and Michigan. More than anything, Ruth loved the time she had with her family.


Ruth is survived by her daughter, Marilyn R. (David) Cottrell of Fishers; son, Steven (Tara) Mitchell of Brazil, IN; grandsons, Adam (Brittany) Mitchell, Aaron (TeKayla) Mitchell, and Tyler Warren; granddaughters, Carrie (Justin) Bennett and Amanda Warren; great-grandchildren, Addison, Jaxson, Avery, Abigail, Luke, and Hannah; plus, several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.


Ruth was preceded in death by her father, John E. Harris; mother, Vinna Harris; husband, Robert M. Mitchell; brother, Robert E. Harris; sisters, Wilma M. Carter and Jeannette I. Whitney; and daughter-in-law, Rebecca Mitchell.


The family will receive visitors from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on Saturday, January 13, 2024, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral & Cremation Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, IN.


Immediately following the time of visitation, a Funeral Service to celebrate Ruth’s life will begin at 1:00 pm with Ruth’s son-in-law, David Cottrell officiating. Burial will take place at Elbridge Township Cemetery in Hart, Michigan.
