Ronald “Ron” E. Herring, 91, Marion, went to be with the Lord at 8:32 pm on Tuesday, August 22, 2023, at Heritage Pointe in Warren. Ronald, son, brother, husband, dad, father-in-law, grandpa, great-grandpa, friend, carpenter, missionary, and pastor–these are all titles he wore well and excelled in each! Ron was the son of Homer and Ruth Herring. He married his high school sweetheart, Sarah Jane Rogers, on August 16, 1952, and they celebrated 66 years of marriage prior to her death in 2018. They had two children: daughter, Diana Grogg (Joe), and son, Brian (Holly), who preceded him in death in 1993.
Ron graduated from Jefferson Township High School (Upland, Indiana) in 1950. He attended Frankfort Pilgrim College (1952-1955) and Marion College (1955-1957). Ron was an ordained minister of the Wesleyan Church and Indiana North District (Marion, Indiana). He served as pastor from 1955-2014 at various churches, including four years as Superintendent of the Christian New Light Churches in the Bahamas. He retired in 2014 from Countryside Wesleyan.
Ron’s faith was instrumental all through his life. Even within the last few weeks, staff at Heritage Pointe shared that they would ask him for prayers, and he immediately would bow his head and pray for them. Spending time with family and friends always brought him joy. Ron enjoyed reading, nature, travel, and history, and he loved using his carpentry skills.
He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and faith community. His spirit will live on through his influence in the lives of his daughter, grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
Additional survivors include six grandchildren, Cortney, Jeremy (Roxann), Jamie (Ross), Matthew (Brittany), Andrew, and Hayli; 10 great-grandchildren, Timothy, Roman, Isaac, Aaron, Ruby, Micah, Evelyn, Hazel, Margaret, and Mila; brothers, Robert and Don (Juanita); sisters, Bonnie and Carolyn (Steve); and sisters-in-law, Carolyn Rogers, Evelyn Herring, Connie, and Lettie; and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Homer and Ruth Herring; wife, Sarah; son, Brian; brothers, Charles (Ada) and Gerald “Bud”; brothers-in-law, Richard and Phil (Nancy) Rogers and Clifton Burton; and sister-in-law, Beverly Herring.
The family will receive visitors from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on Friday, August 25, 2023, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral & Cremation Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, IN.
Immediately following the time of visitation, a service to celebrate Ron’s life will begin at 1:00 pm with Pastor James Sonnefield officiating. Burial will take place at Gardens of Memory in Marion.
