Rev. James E. Sexton

Rev. James E. Sexton, 88, Gas City, passed away in his home at 8:17 am on Friday, August 27, 2021. He was born in Wilmington, North Carolina, on Sunday, January 8, 1933, to John and Ruth (Helm) Sexton. On June 8, 1963, he married Fredianne “Freda” Walker, who survives.

Jim served in the United States Army. Following his military service, he owned and operated Jim’s Appliance Center before receiving a call into ministry. He served the Calvary Baptist Church in Gas City for many years. After his retirement, he and Freda became members of Sunnycrest Baptist Church in Marion where he served as Assistant Pastor for Senior Ministries. Jim also was a proud member of the VFW.

Along with his wife, Jim is survived by his sons, Victor Orona of Marion, Michael (Dawn) Orona of Marion; daughter, Laurie (Bill) Gray of Gas City; 13 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; brother, John (Fern) Sexton of Garland, NC; daughter-in-law, Jane Sexton of OH; two sisters-in-law, Bucky Walker of Gas City, and Gerry McClellan of Streater, IL.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ruth Sexton; and sons, Darrell Sexton, and Donald R. Sexton.

The family will receive visitors from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, September 3, 2021 at Sunnycrest Baptist Church 2172 W. Chapel Pike, Marion, In., 46952.

A funeral to celebrate Jim’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 4, 2021 at the church. Pastor Troy Bishop will be officiating with burial following at Grant Memorial Park.
