Philip L. Harts, 77, of Amboy, IN went to be with the Lord Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at 11:15 AM at Marion General Hospital. He was born in Peru on December 11, 1938 the son of John R. and Beulah Agness Harts. Phil married his high school sweetheart, Twila Ann Rich on April 15, 1961 and she survives. Phil graduated from Converse-Jackson Twp. High School in 1956 and attended Purdue University’s Agricultural Short Course for Farmers. He resided in the Amboy area all of his life and was a self-employed farmer until his retirement in 2003. In 1957 Phil enlisted in the U.S. Army for six months active duty followed by seven years of weekly meetings and two week summer camps. He was a member of the Converse Church of Christ, the Young at Heart Sunday School Class and the Senior Saints of the Church. Phil enjoyed fishing, golf, mushroom hunting and most all sports played with a ball. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. Phil’s favorite past time was owning and training Standardbred race horses which he did for more than 30 years. He was a member of the U.S. Trotting Association, the Indiana Standardbred Association and the Indiana Horse Racing Commission. All of his horses were special and he was fortunate to have several good ones through the years. Phil and Twila enjoyed ten winters in Braden Castle Park, Bradenton, FL. He served on the Braden Castle Board of Directors. Phil belonged to the Braden Castle Shuffle Board Club where he won several tournament trophies and was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 2009. Phil is survived by his loving wife of 55 years Twila, his brother Lonny Harts and his wife Jan of Amboy, a niece Julie Frey and her husband Eric of Sheridan, nephews Jeff Harts and his wife Nikki of Converse and Brad Harts and his wife Karen of Amboy, two great nieces Alyssa Arnson and Aliya Harts and six great nephews, Justin, David and Jonathan Frey, Ethan and Colin Harts and Peyton Harts. He was preceded death by his parents and grandparents. A service celebrating the life of Philip L. Harts will be held at 10:30 AM Saturday, October 22, 2016 at the Converse Church of Christ, 301 E. Wabash Street, Converse, IN with Pastor John Clark officiating. Burial will be in the Converse Cemetery. Family and friends will gather from 4:00-8:00 PM on Friday, at the Converse Church of Christ. Memorial donations may be made to the Grant County Community Foundation, Harts Family Endowment Fund to provide assistance to various programs at the Converse Church of Christ. The family wishes to thank the Wesleyan Health Care Management and Staff, especially Dr. Srikanth for Phil’s Care during the nine years he resided there.
