PERU, IN – On August 11, at approximately 6:36pm, officers were dispatched to the 100 block of Blackhawk Court, in reference to an unresponsive female. Once officers arrived they located a 27-year-old female lying in the lawn. The female had no pulse, wasn’t breathing, and her lips were turning blue.

Sergeant Samantha Raber administered a dose of Narcan to the female, while Officer Lee Mitchell began chest compressions. A short time later, the female began breathing and regained consciousness as she was being placed into an ambulance.

The female was then transported to Dukes Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Naloxone (Narcan™) is an opiate antidote which reverses an opioid overdose in much the same manner as an EpiPen (epinephrine injection) reverses an allergic reaction. Opioids include heroin and prescription pain pills like OxyContin, Percocet, methadone, and Vicodin. When a person is overdosing from an opioid, their central nervous system and respiration system is depressed and breathing slows or stops. Naloxone blocks the effects of opioids and reverses the effects of an overdose.

Officers of the Peru Police Department are supplied the Narcan through Miami County Prosecutor Bruce Embrey.
