Peru Cashier Assaults Customer

PERU, Ind. – Peru Police say a gas station cashier punched a customer in the head after a verbal altercation in the parking lot over how the cashier handed the customer his change. Officers responded to McClure gas station on West Main Street after it was reported cashier Benjamin Offutt, 30, Peru, had assaulted a customer. Once on scene, the victim told police he had purchased items inside the store. When Offutt handed him his change, he threw the coins into his hand and caused them to scatter all over the counter, according to a probable-cause affidavit. The victim said he became upset and told Offutt he was disrespectful before leaving the store. Offutt told police he followed the customer out into the parking lot to explain he wasn’t being disrespectful. He said they then got into an argument over the incident before the customer cussed at him, which upset Offutt. The victim told police Offutt then pushed him down onto the concrete. When the victim tried to get up, Offutt punched him in the side of the head, according to the affidavit. The victim told police the punch gave him a headache and he sustained scraping on his elbow from hitting the concrete. Offutt faces one misdemeanor charge of battery. At the time of his arrest, he was also served an outstanding warrant for failure to appear on other battery charges in Wabash County. He was incarcerated at the Miami County jail, where he has since bonded out.
