Martha “Jean” Mendenhall

Martha “Jean” Mendenhall, 98, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, formerly of Wabash, died at 11:05 pm, Tuesday, March 12, 2024, at her daughter’s home surrounded by family.  She was born on December 4, 1925, in Wabash, Indiana, to James and Eva (Courter) Barrus.

Jean was a 1943 graduate of Wabash High School. She was a homemaker, she also worked at Brewer’s Dairy Bar, and the Wabash Plain Dealer. Jean married Marvin J. Mendenhall on November 17, 1945 in Wabash County; he died December 1, 1980. She was a former member of the St. Matthew’s United Church of Christ. Jean enjoyed bowling, playing scrabble, cards, euchre, walking with friends, and teaching her daughters’ how to make homemade noodles. 

She is survived by three children; Michael (Penny Tandy) Mendenhall of Indianapolis, Indiana, Diana (Larry) Stierwalt of Venice, Florida, and Carol Anglin of Fort Wayne, six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.  She was also preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, James “Jim” Barrus and Bob Barrus, and five sisters, Dorothy Akers, Margie Spaulding, Kate Roth, Pat Wrisk, and Helen Sigler.

Funeral services will be 11:00 am, Saturday March 16, 2024 at Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service, 1241 Manchester Avenue, Wabash, with Pastor Laura Helm officiating. Burial will be in Friends Cemetery, Wabash.  Friends may call 9:30 am – 11:00 am, Saturday at the funeral home.

Preferred memorial is the Wabash County Cancer Society.
