NORTH MANCHESTER,Indiana – A North Manchester woman has been named as one of the $1,000 winners of the H&R Block’s “Grand in Your Hand” sweepstakes. Every day until February 15th, individuals who file their tax returns with H&R Block have a chance to win $1,000. And 1000 people a day win $1,000 nationwide. All who file their taxes through H&R Block are entered automatically and will receive an email telling them if they’ve won. This is the first year the company has used the sweepstakes promotion.
Mary Alice Anderson filed her taxes and found out she won the cool grand via email last week. A check presentation, complete with cake and balloons, took place on Wednesday morning at the H&R Block location at 116 N. Walnut Street in North Manchester. Anderson describes her reaction when she heard she won.
Anderson said that H&R Block has prepared her taxes for at least 20 years and when asked if all those years of filing her taxes with the company final paid off, she laughed and said “that’s right!” H&R Block Area Manger Amanda Coffelt told MiBash News that she hopes the contest continues next year because the employees at the location “love helping people out.”
Mary’s husband, Tom Anderson, said that he hopes the couple will recoup some of the money they paid to the government this year but he did admit, however, that Mary wants to use some of the green for shopping.
Another piece of good news on Wednesday afternoon for H&R Block customers in the area is that another winner from North Manchester was named and another $1,000 will be presented in the office on Walnut Street Monday morning at 9 am.
For the winners, unfortunately, Uncle Sam requires that H&R Block report the value of all winnings over $600, so they’ll be paying taxes on the $1,000 they received from a contest as a result of filing their taxes.
