Maconaquah Student’s Patriotic Art Project Goes Viral

MIAMI COUNTY,Indiana – A Maconaquah High School student’s art project is going viral all across the country and the world. Senior Jacob Feazel created a 4 by 6 foot American flag made out of 4,466 little army men painted red, white and blue. The plastic toy soldiers were spray painted their respective colors and then glued into a platform to make a mosaic of the stars and stripes. It was done for Feazel’s senior art project and took over 56 hours to complete in an 11 day time frame.

Feazel’s mother Stacey put images of the project up on Facebook and within a few hours the post started racking up thousands of shares. By last count on Friday evening, her post has received 83,000 shares and an untold number of reaches. People have contacted Stacey from Louisiana to Amsterdam expressing their love for the piece. She has heard that over 60% of the shares have been military families and organizations. In fact, some military groups have expressed their desire to give Jacob metals or other forms of recognition for his patriotic flag.

Jacob Feazel told MiBash News that his piece was inspired by the famous Memorial Flag work by artist Dave Cole. While that work had green army men practically drowning in gobs of thick red, white and blue paint, Feazel has his toy soldiers individually painted for a much sharper, detailed look. He’s had several offers to buy the patriotic piece but, as for now, he’s not selling because he has other plans for it. Jacob said he plans on entering it into the Cole Porter Scholarship before including it in various art shows around the area. Grissom Air Reserve Base has also expressed a desire to display the piece.

He added that he liked the idea of the army men making up a flag to honor those men and women who have served our nation. Stacey said that Jacob has always been a patriotic kid and his favorite superhero is Captain America. Stacey Feazel on how much attention her Facebook post has gotten.

Jacob plans on first attend Ivy Tech and finish up his schooling at either Ball State or Purdue. His long term goal is to work for Disney’s animation department. He was shocked when someone from Disney contacted his mom via social media Thursday night and asked for permission to share the Facebook post.

    I desperately want to recreate this for my father who is retired USAF and has worked pretty much full time for the last 10 years working with Wounded Warriors. I just can’t figure out how Jacob did the stars.
