Maconaquah Elementary Students Knit Hats for NICU Children

MIAMI COUNTY, Ind. – Nearly 80 families with a child in the Franciscan Health Lafayette East neonatal infant care unit (NICU) will receive hats knitted by Maconaquah Elementary School students this winter. Mac El’s student council and a group of Maconaquah staff members worked after school several days to create the hats for families in need as a way of practicing community service. Student council sponsor and fourth grade teacher Kristin Candelaria said she wanted to make student council a service-oriented group this year, which is her first year as the sponsor. Candelaria said she hopes students “felt a sense of pride and accomplishment in their work” and “what it feels like when you serve others around you.”
