Local Volunteer Fire Depts to Get Grant Money

INDIANA – Sixty rural volunteer fire departments from 36 counties, including Roann and Lagro, were awarded more than $250,000 in Volunteer Fire Assistance grants Thursday, Aug. 25, according to Cameron Clark, Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) director.

The DNR Division of Forestry will administer the grants that are available through the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service. This year’s awarded grants ranged from $575 to $5,000.

Lagro Volunteer Fire Department was awarded $1,672 while Roann Volunteer Fire Department was awarded $5,000.

DNR Forestry staff reviewed grant applications and selected recipients based on population density, acres of public wildlands protected and wildland fire reporting to DNR Fire Control Headquarters.

Grants may be used for training, installation of dry hydrants or to purchase necessary firefighting equipment and gear to combat wildland fires.
